ABOUT THE TEAM
Greg Beller works as an artist, a researcher, a teacher and a computer designer for contemporary arts. At the nexus of Arts and Sciences at IRCAM, he has been successively a PhD student on generative models for expressivity and their applications for speech and music, a computer music designer, the director of Research/Creation Interfaces Department and the product manager of the IRCAM Forum. Founder of the Synekine Project, he is currently doing a second PhD on “Natural Interfaces for Computer Music” at the HfMT Hamburg in the creation and the performance of artistic moments.
ABOUT THE SONG
A prototype of an interactive score editor with automatic score completion was implemented and used in a concrete artistic context: The creation of four original scores from fragments of madrigals written by Carlo Gesualdo in the context of the musical theatre show “GESUALDO, eine Autopsie”, premiered in January 2021. “Belta tormenti” is an example of a composition written with the interactive score editor. An original madrigal made of Gesualdo’s score fragments for four synthetic voices and one human soprano voice, premiered by Miri Rottmayer.
ABOUT THE HUMAN-AI CO-CREATION PROCESS
The auto-completion paradigm was applied to computer music composition. Embedded in a prototype interactive score editor, a generative model was trained on an initial corpus which can be defined according to the composer, the musical style, the mood or another custom categorisation. At each note insertion, the model suggests a possible continuation of musical phrases by superimposing them on the score. The user can then interactively choose or avoid quotes from the corpus and modify them at will. Based on interactive machine learning, completion suggestions are progressively personalised, according to the curatorial and editorial choices made by the composer. The score editor becomes a personal companion to the composer in classical tasks such as composition, harmonisation, arrangement, orchestration.
