ABOUT THE TEAM

I am a classically trained violinist with a background in physics and engineering. After some years in the world of insurance and management consulting, I joined a tech startup in green energy. I’ve always enjoyed building new things and the crossover between music and AI is a perfect place to create.

ABOUT THE SONG

Pure Paint was created on a rainy morning by a machine, programmed to listen to 13 full years of Trance music over the course of 17 days. The song is presented in its pure, unaltered form as the direct output of the AI model.

ABOUT THE HUMAN-AI CO-CREATION PROCESS

The AI model behind Pure Paint is MP3net. MP3net combines the architecture of AI models used for image creation, with the efficiency of MP3 compression techniques to generate minute-long, coherent songs. The model is in control of the full song creation process from sound texture, timbre, melody, to structure and arrangement.

Once trained, MP3net can generate a myriad of new songs almost instantaneously. From a set of about a hundred promising samples, I picked my favorite three. I paid most attention to audio quality, melody and overall song structure. I noticed that often the better the audio quality, the less interesting the song structure and vice versa. This was particularly true for songs with singing, where the audio quality was often lower. Finally, I asked friends and family to pick Pure Paint amongst my favorite three.
