About the TEAM
Dr Shama Rahman is a Sitarist, and Nico D’Aleman is a bassist, and they are both sonic artists. They have a duo named Brain.wav, and they bring their unique process ‘iBoS: In Brain Out Sounds’ improvising with brain and acoustic waves, creating bionic loops. Brain.wav sonifies brain activity mapping different sonic qualities such as arpeggiation, pitch, volume, rhythm and electronic filters to different brainwave properties such as frequency, amplitude and complex patterns using AI algorithms developed by Dr Rahman’s startup NeuroCreate, and trained on her PhD data on the neuroscience of creative musical performance.
About the HUMAN-AI PROCESS
To create ‘Flow the Groove’, the musicians’ brain activity were captured and streamed with brain-sensing wearables. This activity was classified in real-time using deep-learning AI models that can detect when the musicians are in the creative Flow mental state, and this was translated into different grooves. The song begins by brain-generated drums and the varying groove reflects the musicians’ constantly changing creative Flow mental state. The musicians incorporate this constantly changing groove into live performance and improvisation, generating a recursive loop - and ofcourse listening to their own brainwaves, in turn changes their brainwaves, so its a tightrope act of AI-human co-creation.
